JETBLUE AIRWAYS - SEA TO JFK

November 1, 2019

JetBlue Airways is a New York City based airline. Their "business class" project is coined "Mint Class". JetBlue explains this as:

There’s no place like Mint.

With residential touches and the comforts of home, our refreshing take on a premium travel experience offers the height of seamless living. Available on select coast-to-coast, Caribbean and Latin America routes, plus all flights to and from London.

Our current Mint flights offer the longest fully lie-flat seat (6'8") on a domestic premium flight¹—including cushions with adjustable firmness and a massage feature, a Tuft & Needle-designed comforter and pillow, and thoughtful touches that will have you on Cloud 9. For extra privacy, you can reserve an enclosed suite with its own door.

This review covers the single seat "suite" in JetBlue's Mint Class, on an Airbus A321, flying between Seattle and New York City.

1. Check-In
Check-in was a very appreciated experience. Sea-Tac airport is an extremely busy place, with crowds so large that it can be difficult to walk around the check-in areas with luggage. JetBlue has a dedicated Mint Class counter that is right at the edge of a connecting hallway, so the process took only a few minutes.

2. Lounge & Pre-boarding
JetBlue operates no dedicated lounges, and has no vouchers available for third-party lounge access. This is perhaps the most disappointing part of the Mint Class experience. Pre-boarding was also nothing special, with plenty of people crowding the gate.

3. Boarding & Pre-takeoff
Mint Class and certain levels of loyalty get to board first, and the process was swift and uneventful.

Upon boarding, a flight attendant warmly greets you. As soon as you're seated, one of the two Mint Class dedicated flight attendants comes over to introduce themselves, and also offers a pre-flight drink. JetBlue's signature drink is called a "limeaid", and it can be served with or without alcohol. The drink is superb, very refreshing, and the perfect way to being a JetBlue Mint journey.

At my seat is an amenity kit, provided to all Mint Class passengers. This one is from Hayward Luxury (https://haywardluxury.com), and comes with lip balm, hand lotion, refreshing towelette, and JetBlue ankle socks. The case itself is made from denim, and really feels like high quality.

4. Seat Review
JetBlue, at time of this particular flight, was the only domestic carrier in the United States offering "suites" on flights within the contiguous states. The seats within these suites recline to a fully lie-flat position, making sleeping quite comfortable. There are even closing doors on the suites, which enhance privacy. JetBlue has a unique Mint Class cabin, also offering a 2x2 seating, alongside the 1x1 suites. While the 2x2 seating doesn't offer a suite with a closing door, it still offers lie-flat reclining seats, and allows you to sit with your travelling companion.

Leg room was exceptional. Individual suite-style seating always offers the most space, but depending on how they are designed, curvature and narrowing where the legs and feet rest can still be a concern. I am 6 foot and 1 inch tall, and I had no problems at all with leg room.

The seat itself was very comfortable, in any of the positions, including lie-flat. I chose to sleep, since this was an overnight flight, and I had no problems doing so. It was both comfortable and cozy, and while I woke up due to turbulence over the Great Lakes, I did get some much needed rest.

The infotainment screen is large, coming in at 15 inches in diameter. I left mine on the "map" setting, as I ate food and even slept. I did quickly scroll through the various movies and shows that were available, and the list was quite lengthy, albeit a bit dated. I've seen this comment in other reviews of the Mint Class experience - it seems that JetBlue saves some money by not having the latest entertainment available.

5. Food
JetBlue does a superb job on food. Given the fact that this is still a domestic flight within the contiguous United States, JetBlue offers excellent food options that one would expect on longer-haul international flights. There were numerous options to choose from - I ended up going with the white fish with peas, and the ravioli with pesto and butter sauce. Both were very warm, and tasted quite good.

I finished up with JetBlue's signature ice cream trio. This was great, and something (ice cream) that many airlines don't offer, which definitely gives them a unique touch.

6. Staff interaction
Most of my interaction with JetBlue staff was during check-in, and on-board during the flight. In both scenarios, staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating. This is very refreshing and appreciated, since many US-based carriers are known for their lackluster customer service.

7. Cost
This Mint Class ticket was being sold for $749.00 one-way. While this might seem like a rather affordable price for a Business Class fare, keep in mind that JetBlue's regular economy fare is only $49.00. In comparison, the cost for Mint is significantly more. That being said, I absolutely believe that the value proposition is there. JetBlue currently offers the absolute best domestic Business Class product in the contiguous United States. Their primary rivals, including Delta, American Airlines and United Airlines, have vastly inferior domestic Business Class offerings. Not only that, but their pricing far exceeds JetBlue's as well. I am confident in stating that Mint Class is the best Business Class value in the domestic contiguous United States market.

8. Rating
The rating classification system is a subjective opinion, using a points allocated based on a first-hand experience. All categories have a maximum of 10 points, resulting in a score out of 70.

Check-in - Dedicated Mint Class check-in, which you are directed to use instead of self check-in kiosks - 9/10
Lounge, pre-boarding - No lounge access, which is the most disappointing part of JetBlue Mint - 5/10
Boarding, pre-takeoff - Priority boarding before other fare classes, which is fairly standard in the industry. Pre-takeoff visit from the cabin crew, drink offered - 9.5/10
Comfort, leg room - JetBlue's Mint Class suites are a product that is unrivaled by their competitors - 9.5/10
Food - Numerous food choices, quick service, tasted great. Signature ice cream dessert was exceptional - 9/10
Staff interaction - Check-in and cabin crew were exceptionally friendly and attentive - 9/10
Cost and value - JetBlue offers a Business Class product that outperforms all their competitors, at a price point that is significantly less than its competitors - 10/10

Total score: 61 out of 70

9. Final Thoughts
JetBlue is known as a "low cost" airline, whose primary competitors include other low cost airlines like SouthWest. Given this status in the industry, it is surprising that JetBlue is able to design, implement and execute such an amazing "next tier" product. Mint Class puts all other domestic Business Class competitors to shame. If the option exists to fly Mint Class, it would be absolutely be LuxuryReview.ca's preferred choice in the domestic contiguous United States market. Therefore, LuxuryReview.ca absolutely RECOMMENDS JetBlue Mint Class.
